Gli obiettivi del dipartimento sono: la modellistica teorica e la progettazione sperimentale di nuovi sistemi molecolari, supramolecolari e macromolecolari con specifiche funzionalità; la sintesi e caratterizzazione, strutturale e funzionale, di molecole, supramolecole e macromolecole e studio del loro comportamento funzionale come tali o come sistemi organizzati per ottenere proprietà cooperative; lo studio sperimentale delle applicazioni innovative dei nuovi nanosistemi a base molecolare in vari dispositivi.
